Your Guide to Skincare in Your 20s

Posted on January 22, 2020

Our skin changes as we age. In our teens, it produces more oil and acne is a major concern. By your thirties, your skin tends to be dryer and starts to show signs of aging and sun damage.

Your twenties are a transitional time for your skin. That means that now is the time to focus on keeping your skin healthy and preventing problems that can arise from poor skincare.

The following rules are great ones for women and men in their twenties to follow for beautiful, smooth, glowing skin in the decades to come.

Rule #1 – Remove Your Makeup

It’s no surprise that most women and some men in their twenties wear makeup. While these products can even out your skin tone and elevate your look, they can clog your pores and make it difficult for your skin to absorb the nutrients it needs.

That means that cleaning your face every night is critical to your skin’s health. It is a good idea to use a cleansing oil or balm to soften up your makeup and follow it up with a good, yet conditioning cleanser to remove excess oil and the dirt and debris in your pores.

Rule #2 – Exfoliate

To get the most out of your skincare, you need to exfoliate one or two times weekly with a chemical exfoliator. These non-abrasive chemicals go into the pores to remove build-up from cosmetics and other skincare products. This is important to ensure that your moisturizers and serums are getting deep into your skin and doing their job.

Rule #3 – Sunscreen

Prevention is key when it comes to sun damage, which includes wrinkles, sunspots, and skin cancer. Use sunscreen daily by applying it over your moisturizer, but before foundation. Foundation with sunscreen often isn’t enough to prevent the most serious sun damage, making this an important rule.

Rule #4 – Use an Eye Cream

The skin around the eye is the most delicate and prone to wrinkles and sun damage. Good eye cream is gentle enough to be used on this delicate area of skin and will help keep the skin moist, smooth, and boost collagen production to prevent and minimize fine lines and wrinkles. It can also improve the appearance of dark circles.

Rule #5 – Retinol

It’s never too early to start age-related skincare. In your twenties, you begin to see signs of aging around your eyes and mouth. Before that begins, use retinol products. These products work deep within the skin to heal damage and boost collagen production to prevent wrinkles and keep your skin smooth, plump, and healthy.
