What is a Photofacial?

A Photofacial or IPL treatment is a light therapy treatment for the treatment of pigmentation. The machine applicator emits light energy that targets unwanted pigmentation in the skin, pulling it further towards the surface with each treatment. Eventually, these spots will slough away as dry skin, leaving you will a more even tone. For complete results, it is recommended that you complete a series of treatments, indicated by your Photofacial practitioner.

How is a Photofacial Done?

To prepare for treatment, the skin should be clean and dry for the applicator to best penetrate the skin. Each treatment will consist of one to two passes. With each pulse, a light zap on the treatment areas may be felt but is well tolerated by most patients. Once the procedure is done, you can use cold compresses to help cool down the skin.

Results

Immediately after treatment, your skin will be red and possibly slightly tender but this should subside within a matter of hours. During a treatment series, it is important to stay out of the sun and keep your skin protected with an SPF of 50 or higher as it will be more sensitive than usual. During this time, you may also feel that your treatment areas are getting deeper in pigmentation. This is totally normal and a good sign! As your treatment series progresses, these spots will come closer to the surface and will eventually “flake” off, leaving skin clearer and free of pigmentation.
