What Causes Scars & Stretch Marks
Scar tissue can form for any number of reasons. From acne to injury to surgery, scars occur as part of the body’s natural healing process. Stretch marks, on the other hand, occur when the skin stretches rapidly and often happen during pregnancy, rapid weight gain or loss, puberty, and certain medical conditions. You can prevent stretch marks and scars by maintaining hydrated skin and following scar treatment to ensure the skin heals properly.
Options for Scar Removal
Depending on the size, color and texture of the scar, we may recommend that you use either IPL light treatment, skin resurfacing lasers or microneedling. A consultation with one of our professionals will be your best indicator for treatment.
A non-invasive treatment, fractional laser beams penetrate deeply under the skin’s surface to stimulate the growth of new collagen and elastin. This targeted treatment uses a laser resurfacing tool to smooth wrinkles, stretch marks, acne scars/acne lesions, dark marks, and enlarged pores. It’s the gold standard for deep repair and skin resurfacing, with results lasting at least six months after the final treatment.
Microneedling
This treatment uses microneedles to produce micro-injury to the deeper layers of the skin, which stimulates collagen production and increases the collagen and elastin fibers. It is very effective when done in a series, to help eliminate deep scarring and stretch marks. Numbing cream is applied for 30 minutes prior to the treatment, making it very comfortable. After treatment, you will be required to apply a full spectrum sunscreen SPF 50 or higher daily to protect your like new baby skin in the treated areas.
Options for Stretch Mark Treatment
Since stretch marks are often just pigment in the skin and are not particularly “raised”, treating stretch marks can typically be done using light energy, or Photofacial technology. When you develop stretch marks, this can be a perfect option to achieve smoother skin again.
Photofacial
A Photofacial or IPL treatment is a light therapy treatment for the treatment of pigmentation. The machine applicator emits light energy that targets unwanted pigmentation in the skin, pulling it further towards the surface with each treatment. Eventually, these spots will slough away as dry skin, leaving you with a more even tone. For complete results, it is recommended that you complete a series of treatments, indicated by your Photofacial practitioner, to fade the appearance of stretch marks.
