Hormone Replacement Therapy: Everything You Need to Know
What is Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)?
As you age, your body produces lower levels of hormones. This fluctuation in hormone levels results in the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause:
- Hot flashes
- Weight gain
- Mood swings
- Vaginal dryness and itching
- Night sweats
- Pain during sexual intercourse
A doctor may prescribe hormones to replace the ones that your body no longer produces. This process is called hormone replacement therapy, or HRT.
Most women take a combination of estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen helps with the bothersome symptoms of menopause, and progesterone protects against uterine cancer and bone loss.
Types of HRT
HRT can be systemic or local. In systemic HRT, hormones travel through the bloodstream and can alleviate most of the symptoms of menopause. Systemic therapy delivers hormones to the body through pills, patches, sprays, pellets, gels, or injections.
Local HRT does not travel throughout the body and therefore creates fewer potential risks. For women who have only vaginal symptoms, local HRT administered by creams, rings, or vaginal tablets may provide relief.
Bioidentical hormones are derived from plant estrogens rather than synthetic materials. The FDA has approved several bioidentical preparations of progesterone and estradiol, a weak form of estrogen. However, to provide individualized therapy, hormones are often compounded (mixed together) by a specialized pharmacy. The FDA does not regulate compounded drugs, so it’s essential to have a reputable team to provide bioidentical HRT for you.
Potential Risks of HRT
There are several health issues associated with HRT. Most patients will not experience serious concerns, especially if the type of HRT they undergo is carefully chosen for them by an experienced, trustworthy doctor. Some potential risks include an increased chance of developing:
- Heart disease
- Breast cancer
- Blood clots
- Gall bladder disease
Who Should Not Use HRT?
Because of the potential risks, you should not undergo HRT if you have certain medical conditions, including a history of blood clots, heart disease, stroke, or hormone-fueled breast cancer. During your consultation, your doctor will review your health history to see if you are a good candidate for HRT.
Weighing the Risks and Benefits
Dominion Women’s Health clinicians will help you determine if HRT is a good option for you. They will fully examine you and measure your current hormone levels. Of course, your current symptoms and medical history will factor into the decision.
The amount of risk depends on the type of therapy, and the amount of time it is received. Most of the problems linked with HRT are caused by using it for a long time.
Use the lowest dosage of hormones that works for you to minimize risk and use it for the least amount of time needed.
Potential Side Effects of HRT
There are a few possible side effects of starting HRT, but these should be temporary and will diminish as your body adjusts to the increased hormones. Side effects may include:
- Weight gain
- Mood swings
- Breast soreness
- Blurry vision
- Vaginal bleeding

Do Lipotropic Injections Work?
Do Lipotropic Injections Work?
Lipotropic injections are intended to be used to increase the rate of fat metabolism in the body. The idea is that the ingredients found in these shots will increase your metabolism and burn more energy and reduce fat stores. Lipotropics can be administered as a fat loss or weight loss tool. A lipotropic injection typically includes vitamin B12, methionine, inositol, and choline. All of these function in increasing energy, metabolism, and insulin function in the body.
Who Would Benefit From Receiving Lipotropic Injections?
More often than not, recipients of a lipotropic injection are those looking to lose weight. In fact, it is believed that results are intensified when exercise and a healthy diet are combined with the injection. A professional will verify that a patient is a proper recipient prior to approving the injection as a component of a weight loss journey.
Are There any Side Effects or Risks Associated With Lipotropic Shots?
As with any injection, there are some possible side effects and risks that come with receiving a lipotropic shot. Some experience pain or irritation at the injection site. Additional research suggests that you could potentially experience stomach issues, fatigue, or unexplained pain. More personalized advice can be provided by your regular physician.
Are Lipotropic Injections Expensive?
The cost per injection varies by location. At DWH Medspa, you should expect to pay $12 per shot or you can puchase a package of 6 for $60. Some clinics allow you to bundle injections for a reduced price. Remember that you will most likely need one shot per week and depending on the amount of weight you desire to lose and the time it will take you, you will most likely need several injections.

The 5 major benefits of Pellefirm
Being bikini-ready takes dedication. Even with hard work and a healthy diet, it’s nice to know you can have help to look stunning this year with a non-invasive skin tightening procedure. Pellefirm is a treatment people turn to for skin tightening without surgery or downtime. This procedure uses FDA-approved radio-frequency devices to heat skin and help stimulate collagen production. These are four benefits that Pellefirm provides for you.
There Is No Pain Or Downtime
One thing people consider before getting any elective procedures is the recovery period afterward. Not everyone has the luxury of being able to take weeks off of work and their social life, which is what makes our non-invasive treatments so popular. When you choose Pellefirm, there is no downtime at all. It’s non-invasive and comfortable. Some people even compare getting a Pellefirm treatment to getting a massage. They feel warm and relaxed with no pain at all during their procedure.
It Tightens Loose Skin Almost Anywhere
Everyone has different areas of the body they struggle with and would like to improve. Pellefirm treatment can be tailored to each person’s individual needs. The applicator wand is small and easy to maneuver, so it can reach any area that needs treatment. Some places Pellefirm can be used include:
- Upper arms
Patients can work with our medical practitioners to come up with the best treatment plan for their goals and body type.
It Can Reduce The Appearance Of Cellulite Temporarily
Besides skin tightening, Pellefirm may also be able to improve skin texture by reducing the look of cellulite. The applicator device’s head has small spheres on it. These spheres work to lessen skin dimpling by moving fluids underneath the skin and allowing them to get naturally removed via the lymphatic system.
Being able to deliver smoother, tighter skin without surgery, harsh chemicals, or downtime makes Pellefirm an attractive option for patients in Richmond.
Sessions Are Fast And Don’t Require Preparation
Before treatment, you’ll need to speak with a professional to get a consultation. They will assess your needs and goals for treatment.
Once you are approved to get the procedure, the rest is simple. You show up for the appointment. Appointments usually only last around 30 minutes per treatment and you can get back to business directly afterward.
With other procedures and treatments, you may need to prepare by abstaining from certain foods, medicines, supplements, or tanning for weeks or months before your appointment.
Effective On Any Skin
Other non-surgical treatments like laser devices might be unsafe for use on darker skin tones. The benefit of Pellefirm is that it’s safe for all skin colors and types. This means any person who is looking for a confidence boost and improvement in their skin laxity can enjoy results from Pellefirm.
When getting Pellefrm treatment, acceptable results may take 4-6 sessions to achieve. Patients may see initial results after the very first session, however. People of all skin tones and skin types have had incredible results with Pellefirm treatment.

How to Choose the Right Sunscreen for You
Sunscreen is the single most effective way you can protect your skin from damage and signs of aging. It can seem overwhelming, however, to look at the options in the sunscreen aisle and pick one that fits your needs. It’s important to know that there are plenty of things to look out for when it comes to picking sunscreen, and that there are a few tried and true things recommended by dermatologists. Here are just a few ways to find the right sunscreen to make sure your skin stays healthy and safe for the long term.
SPF, or sun protection factor, is a measure of how much protection a formula provides versus bare skin. So, wearing SPF 30 provides 30 times more protection than if you weren’t wearing any sunscreen. Most dermatologists recommend at least SPF 30, but formulas higher than SPF 50 generally aren’t recommended since they don’t provide any more discernable protection than SPF 50. For daily use or an hour or two out in the sun, SPF 30 is usually sufficient when applied properly (15-30 minutes before you go outside). If you’ll be outside for longer, you should make sure to use SPF 50 and reapply every couple hours at most.
Note that many sunscreens don’t meet their advertised level of sun protection simply because of the difficulty of the manufacturing process. When in doubt, always aim for a higher SPF since, even if the formula doesn’t meet the SPF 50 label, it still offers sufficient protection.
Waterproof Isn’t Truly Waterproof
Waterproof sunscreen can be helpful if you’re enjoying water activities, but keep in mind that no sunscreen is truly waterproof. You should still reapply frequently and make sure you’re still protected after going in water. If you’re on a lake or large body of water, remember that the environment can reflect and magnify UV rays, meaning you’ll be exposed to sun damage that way, too. Always make sure to protect your eyes as well with UV-blocking sunglasses.
Broad Spectrum Is a Must
“Broad spectrum” protection means that the formula protects against both UVA and UVB rays. The sun emits both of these types of radiation, but they affect the skin in different ways. UVA rays can cause signs of aging over time, while UVB rays are responsible for sunburns and, ultimately, cancerous activity. Even if you’re not prone to sunburns, a broad spectrum sunscreen will protect against both and offer the most benefit to your skin.
Mineral vs. Chemical Formula
Mineral sunscreens are sometimes marketed as “natural” formulas and use ingredients like zinc compounds to physically block UV rays. Chemical sunscreens use other active ingredients to block UV rays and are more effective at blocking sun exposure. These types of sunscreens can often be more cosmetically elegant and don’t leave a whitish “cast”, making them a better option for daily use.
Spray vs. Lotion
Spray sunscreens can be more convenient to use outside and reapply often, but it can be easier to miss areas of the body. If you use spray sunscreen, make sure to still rub it in to the skin and ensure you’re completely covered. However, spray sunscreens are not usually recommended for children since the formulas can be harmful to breathe in.

The Best Ways to Prevent Wrinkles
One of the natural effects of aging is the development of wrinkles. Fortunately, there’s a huge variety of cosmetic treatments available on the market to rewind the clock and refresh your look. However, one of the best things you can do is prevent the need for treatments altogether! By taking a few key steps and making some lifestyle changes, you can keep your skin young and vibrant for the long term. Here’s what to know about preventing wrinkles and how our team can help.
Protect Your Skin from the Sun
The sun is one of the worst offenders when it comes to damaging the skin. In addition to its harmful UV rays being able to cause skin cancer, it also leads to the development of premature wrinkles. Even when you’re in your 20s, you should take measures to protect your skin from the sun every time you’re outdoors. Wearing sunscreen with SPF rating 30+ is one of the best things you can do. Apply this every morning and make sure to keep your eyes covered with UV-blocking sunglasses. If you’re outside for long periods of time, don’t forget to reapply!
If you’re a smoker, you run the risk of many potential medical problems, but smoking can also damage your skin. The chemicals that make up cigarettes can cause premature aging by breaking down your skin’s natural collagen and elastin that keeps your skin supple and smooth. Additionally, smoke itself can be drying and make your skin more prone to creasing. If you smoke, now is the time to quit.
Get Enough Sleep
Getting plenty of quality sleep can help combat the effects of aging and prevent wrinkles. You should aim for at least seven to nine hours per night. When you don’t get enough quality sleep, it can lead to the production of excess cortisol in the body. Cortisol is a stress hormone that can break down skin cells and lead to wrinkles. It can also cause a variety of other long-term health problems.
Eat More Fish
Fish is healthy and delicious – and it can even be good for your skin. Salmon, in particular, can provide your skin with omega-3 fatty acids, which can provide nourishment and keep it younger and plumper. More people who consume fish that’s rich with omega-3 fatty acids have more youthful skin with fewer wrinkles. Omega-3s have also been shown to have many health benefits, so you should aim to eat fatty fish like salmon at least once per week.
Eat More Fruits and Vegetables
Eating a generous portion of fruits and vegetables every day can help keep your skin smoother and younger-looking. Fruits and veggies rich in antioxidants can fight damage caused by free radicals and make your skin healthier as a whole.
Avoid Over-Washing Your Face
Wash your face with a gentle cleanser at least once per day, but no more than twice. Washing too much can strip your face of its natural, protective oils, leading to dryness. When it comes to your skin, it’s always better to take a gentle approach and avoid being too harsh with your products or techniques.
Moisturizer is a must when it comes to combatting the effects of aging. Moisturizing can keep wrinkles at bay and nourish your skin, keeping it more youthful and smooth. When in doubt, use a gentle, unscented moisturizer after washing (and make sure to moisturize nearby areas like your neck, decollete, and undereyes).

Show Your Skin Some Love! Our Favorite Treatments
People say that our life stories are written on our faces. But if you feel like your story shows you looking older than you feel, you may be interested in facial skin rejuvenation treatments in Richmond, VA. FOr softening a deep furrow, erasing fine lines, and editing patchy spots, there are increasingly effective procedures and products to help restore your skin worn by time.
An increasing number of women are seeking out skin restoration techniques that take little time to recover and are more subtle. However, perhaps the best way to know what procedure(s) are right for you is to schedule a consultation with our skincare professionals, who can recommend a suitable treatment plan.
Most Popular Skin Procedures
Both our clients and our staff love these following techniques, whether you’re looking to get rid of scars, sagging skin, fine wrinkles, or nearly any other skin imperfection.
There’s a reason Botox is among the most popular requested treatments in Richmond. Able to treat dynamic wrinkles all over the face, Botox’s simple treatment provides temporary relief for wrinkles on the forehead, outer eye area, or jaw muscle to dampen muscle movements that cause wrinkles.
2. Soft Tissue Fillers
This procedure involves injections of dermal fillers under the skin to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, increase cheekbones height, restore fullness to the eyes and cheeks, restructure lips or contour the jawline. Dermal fillers utilize hyaluronic acid to add volume in treatment areas throughout the face. The body absorbs the hyaluronic acid over time, meaning this treatment is temporary, but can last up to two years.
3. Chemical Peels
Chemical peels and other facial procedures can be highly effective for treating age spots, superficial damaging, wrinkles, and discoloration. An acidic solution, usually salicylic or glycolic acid, is applied to the skin for several minutes, softening skin cells and getting rid of top layer of skin while stimulating new, healthy skin growth. Results may vary depending on the strength and type of acid solution and how deep the peel penetrates. These factors will vary according to your skin health, goals, and condition.
Microdermabrasion is a great way to start fresh by physically removing dead skin cells and creating a completely even skin tone and surface. This precise exfoliating procedure restores a youthful glow to tired, worn skin and provides a ready foundation for additional treatments and products.
Microneedling is an inexpensive, risk-free, and painless technique for preventing and treating wrinkles. One of our certified aestheticians rolls a device with tiny needles over the surface your skin to cause small perforations that fuel elastin and collagen production. For increased comfort, you can have a topical anesthetic substance applied before and after needling to reduce any potential pain.
6. Laser Therapy
Laser skin treatment can improve skin texture, tightness, and tone, and remove wrinkles and fine lines in a non-invasive process. The fractional laser at Dominion MedSpa is able to target specific cell types in a skin layer and treat conditions like spider veins, acne pits, pigmented birthmarks, and port-wine stains. It is a nearly painless procedure that creates significant and long-lasting results for women in Richmond and the surrounding areas.

How SculpSure Can Help You Achieve Your 2021 Goals
If you’re ready to finally achieve the body shape you’ve wanted in the new year, you can consider getting SculpSure. This non-surgical procedure is a simple and easy way to get rid of stubborn body fat. It can treat body fat all over the body, including the chin, back, thighs, and abdomen. This procedure is great for people who have trouble losing fat from these and other areas even through diligent exercise and healthy diets.
How Does SculpSure Work?
Using targeted laser energy, SculpSure heats fat cells beneath the surface of the skin to damage them and cause your body to expel them naturally. There are four steps in this treatment process.
- One of the medical spa professionals at Dominion Women’s Health will place the SculpSure device in the targeted area.
- The laser begins to deliver heated energy to the fat cells. This causes the cells to break down.
- After the treatment, the body’s lymphatic system works to remove the targeted fat cells over the course of a few months. Fat is permanently removed from the treated area during this process.
- Many people require multiple treatment sessions to achieve their desired results.
Benefits of SculpSure Treatment
SculpSure is a highly popular procedure, especially around the start of a new year, due to its simplicity and effectiveness in helping people achieve a body contour they love. Other benefits include:
- Safety – This procedure is 100% non-surgical and non-invasive and is FDA approved. Unlike other treatments or plastic surgery procedures where you have long downtimes or pain, this procedure is nearly painless and requires no recovery period.
- No scarring or bruising – SculpSure does not cause any scarring or bruising on the skin, nor does it cause any inner tissue damage to cells other than the targeted fat cells.
- Time-saving – SculpSure treatments last only 25 minutes. Patients can go right back to work and get on with their day after a session.
- Minimal side effects – Because SculpSure is non-surgical and non-invasive, the after-effects are very mild. Some people may see a mild redness or mild tenderness. During the treatment itself, patients report a deep warming sensation.
- Long-lasting results – When you get SculpSure procedure, its effects will last for many years. As long as you maintain a stable weight and have a healthy lifestyle, fat cells removed by SculpSure will not return to the treatment area.

How to Prevent Dry Winter Skin
When the full force of winter begins, it instinctual to start worrying about your skin. Winter can damage your skin, making it itchy, dry, and irritated. Even the things that make winter memorable, such as attending outside barbecues and sitting by a roaring fire, can have detrimental effects on your skin.
How Does Winter Dry Your Skin?
Some of the things we perceive to be right for our skin might actually wreak havoc on it. For example, taking a hot shower seems like a great way to warm up in the cold months, but hot water makes your skin dry by stripping it of its natural oils. Additionally, experts believe that the human skin becomes thinner and dryer with age, making it prone to scaling, itching, chronic dryness, and cracking. Dry skin occurs when the epidermis weakens by age or when environmental factors damage it.
Fortunately, there are multiple ways to combat dry winter skin and keep your skin supple and feeling moist throughout the season.
Here are six hacks to keep your skin feeling moist during the winter season.
1. Cover Your Skin When in The Cold
Arm yourself with gloves, scarves, and hats during winter. The winter cold combined with wind can take a toll on exposed skin. Additionally, it is imperative that you put on natural materials like cotton, because synthetic fabrics can irritate and itch sensitive skin, making it dry in the long run.
2. Limit Shower Time as Well as Temperature
During the cold season, an extended steamy shower feels great, but you could be hurting your skin. Instead, take a lukewarm shower for no longer than 10 minutes. Also, don’t wash your hands with extremely hot water. Washing hands in warm water is equally effective in eliminating germs and is less irritating to your skin.
3. Moisturize Regularly
Remember to moisturize your skin after washing up. To maintain healthy glowing skin, choose a cream or ointment that works best with your skin. Regular lotions are effective, but they are better used in warmer climates. Moisturize your hands after each washing to prevent skin cracking. In addition, put on waterproof gloves when cleaning your house or when washing dishes for extra protection against harsh soaps and chemicals.
4. Eat Right and Drink Plenty of Water
The most effective way to avoid dry skin during winter is to mind what you eat and stay hydrated. If you have dry skin, eating foods rich in omega 6 fatty acids or omega 3, such as flaxseed oil and fish oil, can help soften it. However, you will need to supplement the right diet by continuing to moisturize the skin from the outside.
5. Use Gentle Cleansers
Using harsh soap can worsen the condition of dry skin. For instance, many standard bar soaps may contain irritating fragrances and ingredients. If standard soaps are making your skin itchier, switch to fragrance-free moisturizing gel or cleanser. Go for products labeled as “fragrance-free” because some products may be unscented but still contain fragrances.
6. Lower the Thermostat
When it’s chilly and frigid outside, it’s tempting to set high temperatures. But extreme heat makes the indoor air dry. Set the thermostat to comfortable temperatures to maintain healthy skin.

Your Best Acne Treatment Options
Treating acne and acne scars is one of the most common reasons patients seek our help at DWH Health & Wellness Med Spa. Acne is not just a problem for teenagers. Many women, for example, are confounded to suffer breakouts when they’re going through menopause. The reality is, anyone can experience acne at any point in their lives. Fortunately, there are many safe and effective ways to treat acne at any age. Here are some acne treatment options:
Topical medications for mild cases of acne can be bought over the counter. More severe cases can be treated by medications prescribed by the dermatologist. Experts claim that the best OTC products contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, but it will take from one to two months before the user sees improvement.
Our skin care professionals offer non-invasive or minimally invasive techniques to combat acne.
Microdermabrasion is where the skin is exfoliated using a stream of crystals. Exfoliation removes the top layer of dead skin cells and stimulates the body to produce fresh, new skin cells. This unclogs pores and helps defeat acne.
Microneeling uses tiny needles that pierce the skin and prompt the body to produce layers of collagen and reduce the appearance of acne scars. The patient is given a topical anesthetic about half an hour before the procedure. Afterwards, they will need to apply a powerful sunscreen and stay out of the sun for a time.
High Frequency Treatment
With high frequency treatment, the skin is treated with an electrical current that supports circulation and the creation of collagen. This helps remove acne and tighten pores.
Fractional laser targets small areas of skin and softens the look of acne scars, whether they’re old or new. Because fractional lasers are so precise, they can target the damaged area without injuring surrounding, healthy skin.
Our professonals also use IPL or photofacials to even out skin tone that’s become uneven due to breakouts. The energy from the light forces the unwelcome pigmentation to the top layer of the skin. Once there, it can slough off with the dead skin cells.
Acne is caused when dirt, debris, and skin oils clog pores, so the best acne treatment is to make sure breakouts don’t happen. A person who is acne prone should wash their face at least twice a day and avoid the harsh cleansers that can inflame their skin. This includes many types of soap. The best soap to use is glycerin-based. Use the soap with lukewarm water, pat the skin dry as opposed to rubbing it then use a toner. Follow the toner with a moisturizer applied before going to bed. Make sure to use a water as opposed to oil-based moisturizer that doesn’t clog the pores.
Putting on a clay mask every few weeks also tones the skin and removes impurities. The best materials for a mask are green clay, bentonite or kaolin.
Anyone who wants acne treatment shouldn’t hesitate to set up a consultation with our professionals at DWH Health & Wellness Med Spa. The number here is 804 447-2303.
The Benefits of Laser Skin Resurfacing
Acne scars. Age spots. Crow’s feet. Sun damage. If you’ve found that these concerns are unresponsive to over-the-counter products, you’ve still got options. Professional laser skin resurfacing is a highly effective cosmetic procedure that can address a variety of different skin concerns with the right package of treatments. Fast and convenient, laser skin resurfacing imparts glowing, younger-looking skin. Here’s what to know about it and how our skincare team can help.
What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Laser skin resurfacing is a cosmetic procedure that uses different types of laser energy to address different skin concerns. It does this by damaging the skin in a controlled manner to boost your skin’s wound-healing response and generate new collagen. In turn, this process also thickens collagen fibers, creating tighter, healthier-looking skin.
What Type of Laser is Used?
At DWH Health & Wellness Med Spa, we use fractional lasers. As the name suggests, this type of laser precisely targets a specific fraction of the skin, creating micro-channels in the skin to jumpstart collagen production. The strength and depth of the treatment will be tailored to your individual goals, and we’ll create the right treatment package for you.
What Concerns Can Laser Skin Resurfacing Correct?
Laser skin resurfacing can address a wide variety of issues, including:
- Age spots
- Fine lines
- Sagging skin
- Crow’s feet
- Uneven skin tone
How Do I Prepare for Laser Skin Resurfacing?
The best way to prepare for your laser skin resurfacing sessions is by following detailed instructions given by our skincare team. This usually includes stopping certain medications or products to make sure your treatment is successful. You should also stop taking blood thinners and avoid sun exposure, as well as stop smoking.
What Happens During Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Your laser technician will place a cover over your eyes to protect them from the laser and then use a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area. Once you’re relaxed and comfortable, your technician will apply the laser energy to your treatment area. Laser skin resurfacing typically takes 30 to 45 minutes for a smaller area, but a larger area can take up to two hours. Afterward, your skin will be soothed and made ready for the recovery process.
What Happens After Laser Skin Resurfacing?
After each session, you can expect your skin to be red, itchy, and scabbed once it begins healing. These reactions are all perfectly normal. You’ll receive detailed instructions to follow which might include things like using only gentle, unscented moisturizers on the area and avoiding sun exposure. Your skin should heal within one to two weeks with some crusting along the way, but your skin will emerge looking more radiant and rejuvenated afterward. You may need multiple treatment sessions to fully address your concerns, so your technician will make sure you understand when to return for your next appointment.
